Root Canal

Understanding the benefits of root canal therapy and what to expect

APositive Image Dental, our dentists assist Devonshire, Bermuda, area patients with addressing various dental problems. This includes treating an infected tooth nerve and extensive infection with root canal therapy. Drs. Ian Campbell, Christopher Allington, and Lara Loescher are dedicated to providing this solution for patients who would like to save their natural teeth from extraction. While many patients have a negative connection with the phrase “root canal,” the procedure is actually pain-free and alleviates discomfort that is often caused by infection of the natural tooth.

What is root canal therapy?

Our team at Positive Image Dental educates our patients on what root canal therapy is and what they can expect from their procedure. Root canal therapy, also medically referred to as endodontic therapy or treatment, is often used to address a problem that impacts the dental pulp inside of the tooth canals. It is the removal of the dental pulp, which includes the nerves and blood supply, to deaden the tooth. After the canals have been cleaned and disinfected, our dentists fill the tooth with gutta-percha and seal the tooth off with composite resin bonding. To further strengthen and protect the remaining structure of the natural tooth, we often place a dental crown over the tooth. This porcelain restoration or “cap” covers the exposed portion of the tooth structure.

What can I expect during my root canal treatment?

Endodontic therapy is performed in a way to ensure the patient is comfortable during the entire process. We start with local anesthetic and proper sedation to calm the patient and confirm that there is no pain or discomfort. Once this has been completed and patients are at ease, our dentist will create an access point into the tooth with specialized instruments to perform the procedure.

After the procedure, patients might experience some soreness, but this is easily maintained with over-the-counter pain medications. Most patients can return to their usual daily schedule the day after their procedure.

Do I need to have a crown placed after root canal therapy?

It is standard for our team to suggest the placement of a dental crown after endodontic treatment. This is because removing the dental pulp, including the nerves and blood supply, can cause the natural tooth structure to become weak and brittle with time. Placing a dental crown will offer extra protection and strength to ensure the tooth does not crack or break. If it does, it may require permanent extraction and replacement.
