Learn about ridge augmentation in Bermuda

When it comes to oral and maxillofacial procedures in Bermuda, patients are urged to connect with the team at Positive Image Dental to discuss their needs. In some instances, patients may require certain treatments to prepare their smile for future surgeries such as the placement of dental implants. One of the more common procedures is that of ridge augmentation surgery.

What is ridge augmentation surgery?

The ridge augmentation procedure is a specialized treatment that is often done after a patient has experienced tooth extraction. The alveolar ridge is the portion of bone in the jaw that surrounds the roots of the teeth. When a tooth is extracted from the jaw, it leaves behind a socket that is empty in the alveolar ridge bone. In most situations, the socket will naturally fill back in with bone and tissue, healing on its own. However, some patients may have a breakdown of the socket and may experience deterioration in the area. In cases such as this, ridge augmentation is performed to rebuild the alveolar ridge. This may also be completed in cases where a patient is interested in replacing their missing teeth with dental implants, which require sufficient bone of the jaw for successful placement. Discussing the need for this procedure starts with a consultation at Positive Image Dental.

Why might I need the ridge augmentation surgery?

This procedure is done in many different situations, including:

  • A need to recreate the natural contour of the jaw and gum.
  • Loss of bone due to injury, trauma, or extraction of teeth
  • Loss of bone caused by late-stage periodontal disease.
  • The breaking down of the natural socket/poor healing after tooth removal
  • Preparations for the placement of dental implants
  • Aesthetic purposes
