Dental Crowns

Teeth that are compromised need an extra layer of protection and strength to protect them. In situations such as this, Bermuda dentists will often suggest the fabrication and placement of a dental crown.

What is a dental crown?

A crown is a dental restoration made precisely for a patient to cover a weakened tooth. The dental cap itself is created from porcelain, a material commonly used in dentistry for its strength and beauty. Porcelain crowns are designed with the patient in mind, custom made for each individual. These restorations will match the rest of the patient’s teeth in shape, size, and colour to ensure seamless integration into the smile. During the initial evaluation, our dentists will determine if a crown is needed and then walk the patient through the process required to place one.

Why might I need a dental crown?

Any patient who has a compromised tooth might need to have a dental crown made and bonded in place over the natural tooth structure. Some situations where this might occur, include:

  • Teeth that have recently had endodontic therapy, or a “root canal”
  • Teeth with large areas of decay that cannot be supported by a large filling alone.
  • Teeth with craze lines and cracks that leave a tooth susceptible to damage
  • Teeth with large chips and cracks
  • Teeth that have had damage that has occurred to the enamel that significantly impacts function and health

Our dentists will decide if a dental crown is appropriate for a patient based on their unique needs during an evaluation. Patients can ask about the process to prepare for their upcoming procedure.
